Installing the Baffles

Installing the Baffles

Photograph by: C. Fox

Date of Photograph: March 29, 2012

The Fish Ladder is a 3 foot wide concrete channel much like a water slide except the fish need to move up hill against the flow of water. Wooden baffles are inserted to create steps that allow fish to travel up the ladder. Baffles create "steps" for the fish to "climb". This photo shows one of the 51 baffles being installed. The Horseshoe Falls Dam is about 10 feet in height and this is the height that the fish must "climb" by using the ladder.
