Beaver Dam Removal on the Pawcatuck, September 2016
WPWA cleared obstructions on the entire Wood and Pawcatuck Rivers this summer to ensure that paddling is as safe and enjoyable as possible. Our obstruction removal program is focused on balancing the needs of wildlife against the safety of paddlers. Only enough of fallen trees are removed to allow for safe passage in all water conditions, leaving the rest as habitat for wildlife. This year we also breached a watertight beaver dam on the upper Pawcatuck. There was no water flowing past the dam causing the stretch of river below to disappear. Check out this great film by Ayla Fox on the process of breaching the beaver dam. If you value this type of work, please show your thanks and support by donating today!
